Letter to representatives

We can do better. The vaccine rollout has been slow in Canada. And while I am sure our government officials are thinking about this as much as I am, I'm unsatisfied with what is being done. So I wrote a letter to my federal, provincial, and municipal governments. Maybe this can inspire you to write something to them as well. I don't care about criticizing what they've done up to now. I just want to push for action.

Addendum 2: upon re-reading the letter I revise my condoning of commandeering refrigeration. You can just BUY the appropriate equipment. I can't imagine that ice cream shops would even have freezer that go to -70°C. That sentence is ludicrous.

January 17th, 2021

This is an address to my government representatives:

We need more vaccines. We need to start vaccinating everyone as fast as possible. Nothing short of a war effort is sufficient. The current plans we have aren't good enough. The more we wait, the more people die. The more people get infected, the higher chance of developing long-term health problems even if no complications from COVID arise.

There is more we can do. We need to:

  • approve the AstraZeneca vaccine and roll it out to anyone who wants it,
  • be vaccinating people 24/7,
  • have The Canadian Armed Forces and The Canadian Red Cross involved on sites,
  • have pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians vaccinating people.

The efficacy of the AstraZeneca vaccine ranges between 60-90% depending on the research consulted. This is better than having no vaccine at all, it has been deemed safe and is being used in the United Kingdom. A more contagious strain has already been detected in Canada.

We're already in a critical situation:

  • In Quebec, there are reports doctors are preparing having to choose which patients get critical care.
  • The new strain has spread faster than predicted in some areas (see Ireland).
  • Even in those mildly affected, there can be long-term health problems.
  • Other medical treatments are being postponed

We need to be creative to find solutions to the problems we encounter. Are we lacking refrigeration? If necessary, commandeer freezers, refrigerators, ice cream shops. Do we need more people to administer the vaccines? Offer the opportunity to those with medical degrees from other countries. Need even more people to administer vaccines? What about those who've administered insulin vaccines? Where do we sign up. Need people to do administrative tasks? I'll sign up for that too. Are you unsure what site in the city is ideal for a pop-up vaccination area? Delegate it to the municipal government, provide funds to rent an arena. Whatever it takes. We're all in this together. And we all get out of this together.

People are dying. And will continue to die. We need to mobilize. If a new vaccine is approved, we need to be ready to start administering all of them on landing day.

We need to do this now. As fast as possible. Because even when we're done vaccinating Canadians, we will need to assist the rest of the world. Whether that's providing the vaccines, shipping refrigeration, or any other need. Because the virus sees no borders.

Voici une lettre à mes représentants gouvernementaux:

Nous avons besoin de plus de vaccins. Nous devons commencer à vacciner tout le monde le plus rapidement possible. Rien de moins qu'un effort de guerre est nécessaire. Les plans actuels ne sont pas suffisants. Plus nous attendons, plus les gens meurent. Plus les personnes sont infectées, plus nous aurons des gens qui développeront des problèmes de santé long terme. Même dans les cas sans de graves complications.

Nous pouvons en faire plus. Nous devons:

  • approuver le vaccin AstraZeneca et le déployer à tous ceux qui le souhaitent,
  • faire vacciner les gens 24 heures sur 24, 7 jours sur 7,
  • impliquer les Forces armées canadiennes et la Croix-Rouge canadienne,
  • demander aux pharmaciens, dentistes, vétérinaires d'être prêts à vacciner les gens.

    • L'efficacité du vaccin AstraZeneca varie entre 60 et 90% selon le rapport consulté. Ceci est mieux que de n'avoir aucun vaccin. De plus que le vaccin a été jugé sécuritaire et est en utilisation au Royaume-Uni. Rappelons que nous avons déjà détecté une souche plus contagieuse au Canada.

    Nous sommes déjà dans une situation critique:

    • Au Québec, selon certains reportages, des médecins se préparent à devoir choisir quels patients recevront
    • des soins intensifs.La nouvelle souche s'est répandue plus rapidement que prévu dans certaines régions (voir l'Irlande).
    • Nous reportons d'autres traitements médicaux.

    Nous devons être créatifs pour trouver des solutions aux problèmes que nous rencontrons. Manquons-nous de réfrigération? Si nécessaire, réquisitionné des congélateurs, des réfrigérateurs, voire même les crèmeries. Avons-nous besoin de plus de personnes pour administrer les vaccins? Offrez l'opportunité à ceux qui ont des diplômes en médecine provenant d'autres pays. Besoin d'encore plus de personnes pour administrer les vaccins? Qu'en est-il des gens qui ont déjà administré des vaccins d'insuline? Besoin de personnes pour effectuer des tâches administratives? Où est-ce qu'on s'inscrit. On est incertain quel site de la ville est idéal pour une zone de vaccination pop-up? Déléguez-le au gouvernement municipal, fournissez des fonds pour louer un aréna. Faites tout ce qu'il faut. Nous sommes tous ensemble dans cette pandémie. Et nous devons tous faire pour s'en sortir ensemble.

    Les gens meurent. Et ils continueront de mourir. Nous devons nous mobiliser. Si un nouveau vaccin est approuvé, nous devons être prêts à commencer à tous les administrer le jour du débarquement.

    Nous devons le faire maintenant. Aussi vite que possible. Parce que même lorsque nous aurons terminé de vacciner les Canadiens, nous devrons aider le reste du monde. Que ce soit en fournissant des vaccins, en expédiant des moyens de réfrigération ou pour tout autre besoin. Parce que le virus ne voit pas de frontières.
